Cartoon engineers verifying link routes from a website to precise destinations in two mobile apps

Deep links should use ordinary HTTPS URLs, prove that the website and app belong together, open a specific in-app destination, and fall back to a useful web page when the app is unavailable. On iOS this pattern is implemented with Universal Links; on Android it is implemented with verified App Links. The link itself is only the entrance. A reliable launch also needs route ownership, parameter validation, authentication rules, fallback content and device-level testing.

What a mobile app deep link actually does

A deep link takes a person to a defined destination instead of merely opening the app’s home screen. A product link can open that product, an order link can open order tracking, and a support link can open the relevant conversation. The same HTTPS address should still work in a browser when the app is not installed.

This gives campaigns, transactional email, QR codes and shared content one durable address. It also keeps the website useful as the public source of information. Apple states that a Universal Link is a standard HTTP or HTTPS link that opens the website when the app is absent. Android App Links use a verified association between the website and application.

Choose destinations before writing platform configuration

Start with a route inventory. For each link, define the web URL, the in-app screen, who may open it, the missing-content state and the browser fallback. Keep the first release small. Product details, public articles, booking details and authenticated order status are clearer starting points than an attempt to map every screen.

Use stable public identifiers. A URL such as https://example.com/orders/8472 expresses a resource; a link built around a temporary screen name or navigation-stack position exposes implementation detail. The app should translate the URL into its current navigation model, so a future redesign does not invalidate old emails and saved links.

Establish the website-to-app association

iOS Universal Links

Apple requires a two-way association. The app declares associated domains, while the website serves an apple-app-site-association file describing the app identifiers and allowed paths. Each relevant fully qualified domain needs the appropriate configuration. Apple also notes that its content delivery network retrieves the association file and devices do not receive every update immediately, so last-minute production changes are a poor release strategy.

Android App Links

Android uses intent filters with HTTP or HTTPS hosts and a Digital Asset Links file at /.well-known/assetlinks.json. With android:autoVerify="true", the system checks that the domain authorises the installed application. Verification status must be tested on a real device; a valid-looking JSON file alone does not prove that the OS accepted the relationship.

Treat these association files as production configuration. Serve them over HTTPS with the correct content type, keep redirects out of the verification path, and include the application identifiers and signing information that match the released build.

Design a safe routing layer inside the app

An incoming URL is untrusted input. Parse it with platform URL tools, allow only expected hosts and paths, constrain parameter length and format, and reject malformed combinations. Android’s security guidance identifies unsafe deep-link handling as a route to host-validation bypass, cross-app scripting and unauthorised actions.

A link may select a destination, but it must not bypass permissions. If the destination requires an account, preserve the intended route, complete sign-in, then re-check access before showing the resource. A link must never delete data, confirm a payment, change an email address or expose private content on arrival. Apple explicitly advises validating all URL parameters and excluding actions that put user data at risk.

Make the fallback useful

Not every tap opens the app. The application may be absent, the association may still be cached, the operating system may respect a previous user choice, or the link may be opened in a context with different behaviour. The web destination therefore needs real content or a clear next step.

A strong fallback keeps the requested product, article or booking visible, then offers an app action without blocking the page. It does not send every visitor to a generic app-store page. If the resource no longer exists, return a deliberate not-found state and recommend nearby content. Preserve campaign attribution only through documented parameters that are necessary, consent-aware and accepted by both the website and app.

Test the complete journey

Test links from the channels where people will encounter them: browsers, email clients, messaging apps, QR scanners and paid campaigns. Cover fresh installation, existing installation, signed-out and signed-in accounts, expired sessions, denied access, missing resources and both supported operating-system versions and devices.

For Android, inspect the system’s domain-verification state and invoke representative links through ADB. For iOS, test a released or correctly signed build with the production association file. Also test browser fallback independently. Record the expected destination and result for every route so regression testing can run before each app or website release.

  • The HTTPS URL returns the intended web page.
  • The operating system verifies the app-domain association.
  • The installed app opens the correct destination from an external source.
  • Authentication returns the person to the original destination.
  • Invalid parameters and unauthorised resources fail safely.
  • Analytics records the journey without exposing sensitive values.

Plan ownership and monitoring

Deep links cross product, mobile, web, infrastructure and marketing boundaries. Assign one owner for the route catalogue and require a compatibility review when a website path, application identifier, signing certificate or navigation model changes. Monitor the association files as public production endpoints and include representative deep links in release checks.

Measure outcomes at useful boundaries: link opened, web fallback shown, app destination reached and business action completed. Keep these events separate. A tap does not prove that the requested screen loaded, and an app open does not prove that checkout or booking succeeded.

How VOWE approaches deep-link projects

Can VOWE connect a website with iOS and Android app destinations?

VOWE can define the route map across the website and mobile application, implement the required web and app configuration, connect each approved URL to its destination and test browser fallbacks and installed-app journeys.

What should be included in a VOWE deep-link scope?

The scope should identify supported domains and apps, destination routes, authentication and permission rules, fallback pages, analytics events, association-file ownership, release tests and handover documentation.

When should a business ask VOWE to review deep links?

A review is useful before launching an app, adding links to campaigns or transactional messages, changing domains or signing configuration, or when existing links open the wrong screen, a chooser or only the browser.

Primary documentation

Implementation details should be checked against the current platform documentation: Apple’s Universal Links overview, Apple’s associated domains guide, Apple’s link-handling security guidance, Android’s App Links verification guide and Android’s deep-link security guidance.
